I am not an eight-year old girl. Therefore, Gwen Stefani’s cultural significance is going to be lost on me to a significant degree.
Still, I’m still thrilled, even seven years after the fact, that her band No Doubt covered Talk Talk’s “It’s My Life.” The video made an impression on my eight-year old mind, exposing me to a pop music that could be thoughtful and dark without being pretentious or lifeless.
Gwen Stefani’s music is the poppy and fun soundtrack of middle-school boy-girl parties–a sort of “It’s My Life” antithesis. But I am happy that she and No Doubt exposed their fans to this fantastic song with it falls a little outside their audience and repertoire.
